GET TO KNOW OUR GUEST SPEAKER

The guest speaker for our up coming reunion is Captain Kenneth (KD) Barker who was the Bancroft's Commanding Officer of the Gold Crew from 1982-85. In the photo above he is with his wife at the graduation of his granddaughter from the Air Force Academy in 2016, where he was a guest speaker.

Captain Barker served 30 years in the Naval Submarine Force. During that time he was assigned to six different boats including the USS Razorback SS 394, USS US Grant SSBN 631,  USS Ray SSN 653,  USS Lewis and Clark SSBN 644,  USS George Bancroft SSBN 643,  USS Tennessee SSBN 734. On both the Bancroft and the Tennessee he was Commanding Officer of the GOLD Crews.

During his active service years he had some shore duty assignments that included being on the staff of the Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Naval Sea Systems Command, as well as serving with the Special Projects Office for Strategic Operations.

Captain Barker concluded his Naval career as the Professor of Naval Science at the Georgia Institute of Tecnology.

His Military awards include: The Legion of Merit (3 times), Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 times). Navy Achievement Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Upon retirement, Captain Barker entered the the Physics Department at the Georgia Institute of Technology as a graduate student. Following graduation he remained on the faculty as a part time instructor of Physics from 1996 to the present.

Captain Barker also taught Physics at Kennesaw State University from 1996 through 2009 where he received the Distinguished Part Time Faculty Award for 2008.

I recently had a conversation with Mr. Barker to go over some of the details of the information presented above and during that talk he told me about a few things that happened while he was the C.O. of our boat. I don't want to tell any details of what those were but you are going to fully enjoy what he has to say. The Captain has been to several of our reunions and the Off Year Picnics and he always has some great "sea stories". So get yourself to Cleveland on the first weekend of June and join us for a great time. If you have never been to one of our reunions, you need to come this time around. You will not regret putting forth the effort or the money to come.
