                                         BANCROFT MADE 70 PATROLS OVER HER 27 YEARS IN THE FLEET AND WAS DECOMMISSIONED IN SEPTEMBER OF 1993

 A NEW BOOK FOR US TO READ. THIS ONE IS WRITTEN BY OUR COMMISSIONING CREW X.O., MR ARTHUR C. BIVENS, CAPTAIN USN RETIRED. MR BIVENS WAS THE X.O. FOR THE GOLD COMMISIONING CREW BACK IN THE MID 1960'S. HIS BOOK IS ABOUT THE EARLY DAYS AND BEYOND OF THE FBM BOATS AND THE FBM PROGRAM. WHEN I READ THE BOOK IT WAS LIKE READING ABOUT EVERYTHING WE JUST FINISHED DOING A FEW DAYS AGO. I PROMISE YOU GUYS; IT IS A REAL GOOD READ. GET IT!

SOME BACKGROUND ON ARTUR C. BIVENS

                                                          MR BIVENS STARTED HIS NAVY CAREER IN 1947 IN SAN DIEGO, CA. WHERE HE WENT TO BOOT CAMP.. IN 1953 HE GOT HIS OFFICER'S COMMISION AND HIS FIRST TOUR OF DUTY WAS ABOARD THE USS COWELL, DD547, AS THE 1st LT. FOR A 2 YEAR TOUR. FROM THERE HE WENT TO SUB SCHOOL IN NEW LONDON, CT. AND ON TO HIS FIRST SUBMARINE, THE USS QUILLBACK, SS424, AN OLD GUPPY 2A BOAT.

IN 1955 HE WENT TO NUC POWER SCHOOL IN NEW LONDON AND THEN 6 MONTHS AT WEST MILTON ON THE PROTOTYPE. HE WAS THEN ASSIGNED TO NEW CONSTRUCTION ON THE USS PATRICK HENRY. LATER HE WAS THE ENGINEERING OFFICER ON THE USS SCAMP WHERE HE QUALIFIED FOR COMMAND. HE MADE ONE RUN ON THE ROBERT E. LEE WITH CAPTAIN JOE WILLIAMS JR.. IN THE FALL OF 1965, MR BIVENS AND CAPTAIN WILLIAMS BOTH WENT TO THE BANCROFT WHERE BIVENS MADE ONE PATROL AS X.O. GOLD CREW.

LATER HE WAS SENT TO THE SAM HOUSTON IN KITTERY, ME. DURING ITS OVERHAUL AND DID 5 PATROLS AS THE C.O. LATER HE WENT TO THE USS CANOPUS IN HOLY LOCH, SCOTLAND AS THE TRAINING AND READINESS OFFICER. HE ALSO DID A COUPLE OF YEARS ON THE SQUADRON 14 STAFF, THEN IN WASHINGTON, DC AS THE SSBN SECURITY OFFICER, THEN 3 YEARS AS THE TRIDENT DEPARTMENT PROJECT MANAGER.

IN 1978, HE RETIRED FROM THE US NAVY AND WENT TO THE COMMERCIAL NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY UNTILL 1990 WHEN HE FULLY RETIRED. HE NOW LIVES IN FAIFAX, VA.
